Have you ever sat down and jotted a list of ideas--Ideas about literally everything and anything? Have you jotted down, say, a list of 20 ideas every day? This is a new habit I picked up recently. I was inspired to do it after reading an article on BuzzFeed that had a list of habits to help you drastically change your life in 5 years (so many lists...). The main purpose of the 20-Ideas-A-Day thing is for you to clear your mind and to perhaps discover something about yourself you were not aware of before...and perhaps to uncover buried treasure. And, by "buried treasure," I mean mental treasure. Basically, revolutionary, creative, unprecedented ideas of how you feel you can change the world. The imaginary light bulb may go off and you'll suddenly realize how you will want to leave your print on the world after your precious time on Earth is over. The ideas you write down can lead you to find out what certain career you want to make for yourself. They can set you on a path to complete self-knowledge (which will probably be a very long path, but definitely one worth traveling on). They can even launch you on a series of adventures where you sample on new experiences that challenge the way you think and feel about the world around you. Or, maybe not. You will never know until you try. So, sit down when you have some free time, when you are dressed in your boyfriend's pajama pants or after you have put the kids to bed. Take out a pen and paper/journal, and jot down 20 ideas about anything. Literally anything. This is probably one of the few chances you have in your daily life to really let your intuition be the dominant voice, so really take advantage of it! Do this every day, or at least as often as you can (for example, I do it when I'm on the bus or at home at the end of the day). Maybe you have buried treasure you have yet to dig out from the sand (or mud, however you want to imagine the metaphor)... :) ~~MC

8/17/2011 0 Comments Write It Down! What's a perfect way to make sure you stay committed to something? Write it down!
I recently started the new habit of writing down a list of what I'm going to do the next day, as it becomes the last thing I do before I throw myself into the deliciously cozy covers of my bed and fall asleep. I write down literally everything I plan to do: 'Exercise,' 'Eat breakfast,' etc. etc...I make sure not to leave out the things I actually have to do to stay alive. But obviously, none of us needs to include those things in whatever list we make. The point of my writing this post is to share that lists are a great way to make sure that the things you must, want, or need to do never escape from that busy-bee mind of yours! If you wish to procrastinate less and also become more committed to things like buying the new furniture or writing that novel you always wanted to write (yes, those little sparks of creativity deserve some fulfillment too), make sure those things are at the top of your list! Lists are quite handy, because once your thoughts are materialized through the driven force of ink that's slightly smeared on the bright page yet that's completely ingrained on the sheet and in your mind, you feel like you owe more to yourself to do the things you wanted and needed to do. The time has finally come for you to get that novel finished, so don't just sit there reading this blog post, go on and start writing that list (and then your novel...)! ~~MC 6/29/2011 0 Comments Italy, Yoga, The Finish LineLast night my family and I visited a group of relatives for a dinner party. And as we sat around the dinner table that was filled with the colors of food and conversation, my mother and her cousin got in the subject of my plan to take a study abroad trip this next Spring to Rome, Italy, for an Art History program. When my mom's cousin realized that the program was only one quarter long, he began to persuade me that spending only that much time in a country that you want to grasp as much as you need and yearn of is practically useless, that in order to really get something out of the language and art and the country itself, I'd have to stay in Rome for a year instead.
And I knew he was right...Especially because he told me that when his daughter was in college and spent a year in France, she had gone from telling him during an urgent phone call that she understood no French after the 3-month mark, to relaxedly saying towards the end of the year that she spoke as fluently and confidently in French as in English! And so, I will definitely keep the idea of staying in Rome for one year in mind. :) (And probably in France too, since French is my minor and the French language is one of many things I enjoy surrounding myself with...). Committment is a big thing when it comes to, really, any type of situation. Whether it's going on a trip to Italy to learn about its art history, or deciding to take a yoga class after months of avoiding exercise (I admit I'm a sort of victim to that situation...), committment is key to getting far. When one begins to face the seemingly difficult things about trying to get to the finish line, such as noticing that you can't do the tree stance as well as you would like, all you can do is place those difficulties in the brightest light possible--in the light that convinces you that rather than hurting you, they will help you gain more confidence to get to where you want to go...So really, once you have taken the time and learned to master the tree stance, you will be one major step closer to being the true devoter to yoga that you wanted to be. :) Committment means moving as far as you can without looking back; looking the obstacles daringly in the eye and telling them they will be overcome; and celebrating all the little and big accomplishments as you move along the path of long-term achievement and enhancement. ~~MC |
